A very large landmark: Scott’s Bluff, Nebraska. The traveling party stopped here for a few days and rested and let the oxen pulling the wagons rest as well. Several of them had become lame because they had lost their shoes. The blacksmith was very busy re-shodding the oxen. An ox’s hoof is cloven, so two shoes were needed for each foot. The men did some hunting in the area and brought in two antelope. Joel describes the antelope meat as the best wild meat that they had found. One thing they couldn’t do back then was drive to the peak of the bluff. We are now able to do that and I got some photos of the North Platte Valley to the east. It is said that you can see Chimney Rock From the peak, but it was too hazy for that today. Also, there were trails all around the peak of the bluff. Did this old man attempt those trails? Nope! ‘Scuse the fingers…
